Hotel Van Zandt Austin Review: Suite Juliet, Geraldine’s and the Rooftop Pool

Updated: Oct 10

I love a day that leaves me with stories to tell. I also love the moment I get to come inside, wash the day off, and get dressed for whatever the night might become. In Austin, I get both. By evening, I want a hotel that feels as alive as the city, with a room that lets me shut the door on all of it when I’m ready.
Hotel Van Zandt understands the assignment.
Inside Hotel Van Zandt Austin
The hotel makes an entrance. Its lobby has a grand staircase, warm low lighting, leather seating, and darker details that feel almost cinematic. There’s something vintage and dressed up about it, but the people give it life. Everyone seems ready to have a good time.
There’s a wedding happening at the hotel during our stay, which makes me smile because my fiancé and I are in Austin for a wedding, too. Ours is elsewhere, but seeing another celebration here tells me something about the place before we’ve even made it upstairs.
We arrive around 6:30 p.m., after finishing work at a ranch and spending the afternoon on a yacht on Lake Travis. I’m tired in that very particular way that comes from a wonderful day outside. At check-in, our host gives us the lay of the land, drink chips, and the late checkout we need after such a full day. The concierge brings our bags upstairs, and we change before heading back down.
Suite Juliet: A Room to Slow Down

Suite Juliet gives us room to spread out. The living area and bedroom sit on either side of a spacious bathroom, with doors that close each space off. There are two sinks, which means I can get ready without negotiating for counter space. A soaking tub stands in the middle of the room, practically asking me to slow down.
First, I get into the shower. That’s the moment the day shifts. The ranch, the boat, the sun, the schedule: I can finally let them go.
Geraldine’s and the Rooftop Pool

Refreshed and hungry, we head to Geraldine’s on the fourth floor. It’s the hotel’s upscale restaurant, serving modern Mexican food, with a stage for live music and a way out to the rooftop pool. We stop for what has become a very late lunch: a Little Gem Caesar, elote-style corn, and a lobster taco. They’re light bites before our dinner plans. We use our drink chips at the bar, then follow the energy pulling us outside toward the pool.
People are talking over drinks and food, fully settled into their evening. The rooftop feels electric, the crowd is lively, and I’m one swimsuit change away from spending the rest of my evening here. But we do have somewhere else to be. So we sit for a while, watching the crowd come alive around us, until our dinner plans pull us away. I’m already wishing we’d set aside an entire afternoon for the pool.
When leaving your hotel feels like missing out on the action, you know you picked well. One night gave us a taste of Hotel Van Zandt. Next time, I’m giving this hotel enough time to show us everything it has.
Dinner Out, a Quiet Night In
We step away for dinner at Fogo de Chão, about five minutes from the hotel by car. Even with a reservation elsewhere, we’re still in the middle of downtown Austin; going out for the evening doesn’t feel like leaving the city we came to enjoy. After dinner, we head back to Suite Juliet for the part of the night that belongs entirely to us.
I run a bubble bath in that beautiful open tub, pour a glass of wine, and take my time. We aren’t going straight to sleep after booking a room like this. We throw on the plush Hotel Van Zandt robes, put on
Netflix from our king bed, and make a night of it.
What I keep thinking about is how quiet the hotel becomes later. The bar closes. We walk through the halls without the evening crowd around us, then return to our room and the view beyond the windows. For a little while, I can take a deep breath and be here, enjoying the quiet, the room, and the person beside me.
Brunch and a Walkable Morning in Austin
The next morning, we grab brunch from Geraldine’s and bring it back to bed. I have avocado toast, breakfast potatoes, and biscuits with jam and honey butter. Eat the biscuits while they’re warm. We could go straight from the restaurant to the car, but I’m not ready to leave Austin yet.
So we leave the car with valet and set out on foot.
One of my favorite things about Hotel Van Zandt is how quickly Austin opens up once we step outside. From the Rainey Street district, we make our way onto Waterloo Greenway, where Waller Creek, native landscaping and pedestrian trails create a surprisingly green route through downtown toward Lady Bird Lake.

We walk toward Cesar Chavez Street, stopping at a few shops and bars and for gelato along the way. We get to take in the city at our own pace, with Lady Bird Lake close by and downtown still all around us. Even in the summer heat, walking is worth it for the chance to see more of Austin for ourselves.
That’s an Austin experience I don’t find in quite the same way in Houston or Dallas, two cities I’ve also called home. Here, a downtown hotel can put you near restaurants and nightlife while the lake draws people out to walk, paddleboard, kayak, and spend time on the water. Hotel Van Zandt feels connected to both sides of that lifestyle. We have places to go, but for once, leaving the car parked is part of the pleasure.
Sometimes a stay deserves fewer plans and more time to lounge. I want an afternoon with no reservation pulling us away from the pool. I want to hear the music at Geraldine’s, linger over a drink, and take our time getting ready upstairs. Hotel Van Zandt gives me a lively Austin night and a private place to come back to. Next time, I’m giving us three nights to enjoy both.
